The Knits are back in town at ZBS!

Okay, so winter might be lagging a little this year but the fashion world doesn't seem to care because the knits are out! It seems as though Nanna never put her sewing needles away this summer because ZBS is stocked up with some of the most amazing knits from the likes of WILDFOX and TORN by RONNY KOBO. Above are pictures of some of the pieces we have received and let me tell you, you would want to get in quick because in colours like apple green, ivory and gold, taupe and baby pink they most certainly will walk out the door. In saying all of this, if you can't even slightly imagine an outfit combining a knit in this heat then let me help you out! I'd start with a pair of white, lilac or light blue wash denim shorts (we have a few perfect pairs from USCARI and FRIEND OF MINE in store) then add a cute bright bandeau or bralette to for a splash of colour. Tie all this up with an awesome pair of ankle boots (check out these booties by Cynthia Vincent) or summer sandals and you're good to go! By all means, a little arm candy or collar sparkle is completely up to you!

Now, if you're a crazy blog fan like us ZBS girls.... then you probably would have seen Jules from Sincerely Jules sporting this amazing tropical stripe collarless EQUIPMENT shirt. What we love most is how she's able to dress such an elegant piece down, without making it look undone. By adding just the right amount of pizazz with her sparkle clutch, leather pants and my ultimate sneaker 'The Con' she confidently 'struts' her stuff in each picture she has posted wearing it. Now if that's a little too much to handle for you... or you would just rather keep it clean cut and simple, then why not team this silky wardrobe gem with a pair of cream or navy pants and a sweet little pair of brogues? Or perhaps, a pair of jeans, a collar of jewels and comfy pair of wedges? There's a whole lot of magenta hanging around in the shop this week and we are absolutely loving it! We have found that even a little pop of this beautiful colour seems to make a 'dull' outfit super colourful. Example, you could pair a CAMEO mesh cape (pictured above) open over a simple black, tan or white swing dress with a pair of sparkly flats and a little bit of bling. We are especially frothing over the AIKO magenta pieces... wide leg pants anyone?? Zara Bryson Claremont has received a nice big shiny delivery of Totomoto - just in time for christmas (and the ensuing parties). Perth hottie Cynthia Ellis is the brains behind these beasties, and we heart 'em. Aside from being majorly into all things animal, they're an easy way to spruce up your basic cocktail dress - just one textural hit of gold or bronze, and there's no colours to complicate matters. Or you could send your casual jeans and stripy tee combo soaring into another stratosphere of awesome with her collar necklaces - the beetle is a particular favourite of mine, possibly because it's a bit Schiaparelli and a bit 80s and a lot awesome.

This outfit centers around the killer chartreuse and blue Lanphi dress. Obsessed with chartreuse and all acid greeny-yellows at the moment. Anyway, it's broken up with a Lanphi belt and teamed with a pair of Beau Coops and a mint Belle Bijoux bag, AND THEN clashed with a pink and grey arm party (spot the Carly Paiker and Gala Curios in amongst it - totes divine) because I'm a rebel without a cause and clashing colours is totally what rebels do between staging coups. Optional: Karen Walker sunnies to deflect the stalker papp when they're hot on the heels of your mad outfit.

Laterz lovelies. I'll be the one avoiding the steely glare of the media.

Do you love your local Boutique, Beauty Salon, Gift Store or Pet Shop?? Do you love the staff that work there, the stock they sell and the services they provide?? Well its up to you to keep them there!! Do your bit this Christmas by thinking before you shop. Avoid the big chains and international online shops this Christmas and SHOP LOCAL. This helps to keep independent retailers trading, keep existing jobs and create new ones, keep a sense of community in your local area and a give a much needed boost to our economy. Do the right thing and KEEP YOUR XMAS $$ HERE!!

if all else fails...

With the sudden explosion of yellow at our Claremont store we thought why not let you in on the (not so secret) secret on how to wear this amazingly fresh, funfilled colour. We seem to be finding ourselves teaming black and yellow together more so than any other colour. (I guess it's thanks to the awesomeness of my favourite superhero Batman that I tend to do this HA!) It's the deep, dark feel of black that allows the yellow to shine bright. This is not to say that it can only be worn with black (what utter nonsense!) because we love it just as much alongside white, beige or any other super-hero bright colour.

If you're still a little hesitant after solely wearing black over the past winter, then perhaps try it a little at a time. Yellow nails or a yellow head scarf? Or why not try a yellow WILDFOX 'I need a Taxi' tee, it's the perfect thing to ease in the colour, especially when it's put back with denim or a pair of black shorts? Personally, I would go all out with a pair of LTB Yellow Molly Jeans cuffed up, (available at ZBS CLAREMONT) a black silk tank, cat eye sunglasses and black patent flats!!

All I can say is that you should never be afraid of colour, or trying anything new for that matter, once you've tried it once we're pretty certain you will try it again!! And, in this case if all else fails .. Keep Calm and Call Batman.. surely he will have a few pointers on the best way to wear black and yellow together!

BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK

This weekend I took some time out to see the film: BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK...A documentary about 80-something legendary Fashion Photographer (and the ORIGINAL Sartorialist) Bill Cunningham.

It starts off slowly but unravels itself to be one of the most moving films Ive ever had the pleasure of watching. Bill's persona is very unique in the fashion world...totally humble, unaffected and graceful. This man is full of contradictions...He adores couture, yet would never wear a designer piece....He feels at home with the Society set, yet sleeps on a makeshift bed in a tiny apartment.....He makes the worlds most revered Fashion Editors stop dead in their tracks to be photographed, yet he barely stops to eat.

This film has to be seen to be believed. It is absolutely divine and I found myself being completely inspired when I walked out of the cinema....That doesn't often happen.
One of my favourite quotes from the film is: "He who seeks Beauty, will find it" I love that.

Now GO GO GO and see this film...Its on at Cinema Paradiso NOW!

Whoever said that boots (knee high, ankle or otherwise) are only for winter was clearly mistaken. All the ZBS girls are complete supporters of a decent Summer boot!

So, after receiving the new FRIEND OF MINE Hutton Boot and KUWAII Summer Deer Boot we thought that perhaps it would be a good idea to show you just how easy it is to wear a boot in Summer.

You may have seen celebrities such as Kate Bosworth and Vanessa Hudgens snapped up in your favourite weekly magazine sporting a great pair of boots, with a cute summer dress or denim cut off and a loose tee. And, you might have thought I wish I could wear that!?

Well, here's some great news for you.. YOU CAN!

For those days when you don't feel like wearing a sandal or a pair of Havi's it's just as easy to pull on a boot to make you're outfit work. Think of it as dressing for winter but cutting down on a few layers and keeping the boot. If you start off with a simple style and colour, the rest is pretty much about building up the look.

So you could perhaps try a cute summer pleated skirt (like our Karen Walker high waist pleated skirt in navy) teamed with a stripe tee or bright colour shirt or tank and then pull on a pair of the Friend of Mine Huttons or the Kuwaii Deers (or of course any other boot you already own!). Once you have the basics sorted add a few more splashes of colour with jewellery and accessories... maybe an Akubra or a pair of acid tone sunglasses (like the Karen Walker Number Ones in acid green).

The way you wear your boots in Summer and in general is completely up to you! It's all about building up the look and starting with the base pieces and adding on. Personally, I say go crazy and be bright because no one wants to be gloomy in Summer!!

Amrit's Song of the Week: My Boyfriend Justin Vernon

Just wanted to do a quick post on my boyfriend, Justin Vernon (i'm obsessed)... You may recognize him from his folk band, Bon Iver (fun fact: "Bon Iver" actually translates from the french phrase "Bon Hiver" meaning good winter). Today I want to share with you his incredible cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me".

I am a big fan of Bonnie Raitt and this song is actually one of my favourite heartbreak anthems, and Justin has definitely done well with this number. His creaking and crooning falsetto combined with the slight reverb of his lonesome piano chords create such hauntingly beautiful sounds. The second release from Bon Iver, their self titled album "Bon Iver", is also definitely worth a listen. I've noticed many blogs have been raving about "Holocene" in which the music video features magnificent scenery from Iceland but my two favourites are "Perth", (ok yes, I am a little biased towards them writing something about little old Perth) and "Beth/Rest".

We are in serious love with the Alushia-Sanchia jewellery brand new in at Claremont. Why? The slightly worn, etched tribal shapes with pops of turquoise are bang on for a season of summer lovin'. It's totally got that free-spirit, well loved thing going on. Can't you just imagine them all piled up on with a burnt out white tee, dewy sun kissed skin, tousled hair and cutoff shorts? Amrit's Music Love - Parklife Favourites!

At ZBS we are so excited about the first festival of summer this weekend.. PARKLIFE!!!!
So I decided to compile a list of my top four artist's playing, that would make a killer set worth checking out. Even if you aren't going, hopefully you fall in love with one of our four featured artists...

1) DIPLO

This Philadelphia based DJ, producer and songwriter is making some of the sweetest remixes around to shake your booty to! I’m really looking forward to his set and one of my favourite remixes of his is Dead Prez’s, “Hip Hop” Total gangster lovin!

2) KIMBRA
New Zealand born, Melbourne based Kimbra is best known for her collaboration on Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” but this little lady can hold her own! Her layering of vocal harmonies and percussion with her loop pedal combined with her quirky lyrics, make her so adorable to watch. This will be one hell of a live show. Really enjoying how cute this video is too..

3) EXAMPLE
English singer and rapper, Example, is Dan’s favourite pick for Parklife. She is especially enjoying this cute, catchy tune at the moment!

4) LITTLE DRAGON
This is my second post on Yukimi Nagano (remember her vocals on the SBTRKT post) but this is her doing her thing with her own band! She is a super babe but rumour has it that their band name “Little Dragon”, is inspired from the fuming tantrums she would throw when recording in the studio. Who cares though when she sounds like this...

Amrit's Song Of The Week

So this week's post needs no introduction! Now I know Beyonce gets a lot of flack for not writing her own songs, and her latest album release "4" received mixed reviews, but the lady can do no wrong in my eyes.

The raw vocal on this loved-up ballad combined with her lyrics, especially "I don't know much about fighting, but I, I know I will fight for you.. Just when I ball up my fist I realize that I'm laying right next to you" is so sweet and I can totally imagine her singing this in Jay's ear (couple crush anyone else??) Another feature track on the album "Party" featuring Andre 3000 is also another favourite of mine!

I'll leave you with ANOTHER video of this song, now this one was shot by Jay-Z backstage at a Beyonce show. The video isn't great but her vocals live are faultlessly incredible, so this one is dedicated to all the haters...

Cantina without a doubt my favourite place to eat. I love their changing menu but in particular I can never go past their Gnocchi and the breakfast date loaf. I am there everyday for coffee and am dining there twice a week, at least. Obsessed.

I also love Mela for there Indian sweets and Latasha's Kitchen for a traditional curry. Satsuki for the freshest Sashimi, and the French patisserie at the Subiaco markets for their freshly baked almond croissants.

4. Trends you love at the moment

Colour blocking brights (Jil Sander style), the flat-form, Palazzo pant.. And I'm also really enjoying the comeback of the jumpsuit.

5. Trends you loathe at the moment

Jeggings/Leggings/Tights do not substitute pants! Ever. Period.

The Tyler & The Creator Summer Mix-tape has been on my gym/car/life playlist non stop for two months straight now, also Birdy's 'A-team' and Wildfire by Sbtrkt.

The Equipment shirt! I think everyone should have a beautiful silk shirt to pair with cute printed shorts, a little leather mini or to throw on with jeans. They wear so beautifully and are worth every penny.

The St James striped tee will be my effortless summer tee, so easy to wear! I also love all the fine jewellery we have in at the moment, in particular the Petite Grand and Ananda Designs.

10. What makes you laugh?

My friend Erin is probably the funniest person I have ever met! My work girls from ZBS and Zomp, my boyfriend and my sister! Zara, when she spends every other second Goggling puppies and my favourite, bad reality TV.

Amrit's Song Of The Week

This week I'm heading back to the 70's for the queen (and my idol), Betty Davis.

Betty Davis pioneered some serious funky soul meets rock, with an attitude like no one had ever heard. She didn't conform to the stereotype of funk in the 70's.. She ditched the brass section and brought in the wailing guitars instead. While her songs were too rocky for black radio and too out there for white radio, she definitely caused a stir in the music scene, even turning down Eric Clapton who wanted to be her producer!

Not only did Betty Davis play with the sweetest musicians around (this track features the Sly & The Family Stone band) but the former model was also married to the great, Miles Davis. She was said to have been the inspiration for "Bitches Brew" and introduced him to Jimi Hendrix, talk about some serious street cred.. Today she is respected as one of the greatest musicians and fashion icons from the 70's.

This week's song of the week is from Atlanta based R&B singer & MC, Nikkiya.

Nikkiya, a cross between Santigold, MIA and Nicki Minaj (minus the vulgarity), has been gaining notoriety with her fresh new sound in the indie/hip hop scene. Looks aside, her mixtape, Speakher (available as a free download), will definitely get you all swagger and ready for some party time this weekend! Nikkiya's sultry r&b vocals combined with her street lyricism and her catchy hooks, definitely make for one ferocious potential superstar.

Her collaboration with Yelawolf on "Speak Her Sex" is also another intimate banger worth checking out.

A L E S S A marks the design debut of Jordie Grist and Sarah MacKellar.

After both working in the fashion industry for some time the girls realised there was an increasing need for a label that could produce easy-wear shapes but still manage to look chic and modern.

“We design our clothes as we would wear them ourselves. Therefore we use simple cuts that compliment any style, prints that are striking yet flexible and fabrics that are beautiful and easy to wear. We take a lot from our surroundings; it might be a friend or an image or an afternoon. It might be an overseas trip, or a piece from a NYC runway or an album. All these things get thrown in together and articulated through our vision of ALESSA.”

“Our collections are exciting because they incorporate what we love about international fashion with a very effortless Australian style. This is the key for us really, designing from an Australian perspective but not limiting ourselves in any way. Keeping open and striking a balance in our all pieces. Finding where that balance lies, now that’s something to keep us inspired.”

The pieces that have just dropped into our Claremont store are divine....They are all silk and the handle of the fabric is thick and lustrous, a beautiful and durable weight. A few weeks back we received Empire Rose's 'Air Antipova' stretch silk top in plain black....a pretty classic little 'building block' piece....well, these little babies flew out the door quicker than you can say "I've already thrashed this top" and we currently have a waiting list for the new batch....

In the meantime.... the geniuses at ER have given us a new version of the 'Antipova' in the most divine Shibori tie dye silk satin in two beautiful colours: Marble (a nude and grey combo) and Quartz (a steel and blue combo) $295 available at ZBS Claremont.

Seems like we’re not the only ones frothing over our brand new Bec & Bridge akubras – these bad boys have practically grown legs and skipped out of our store. For those of you who are still a little suspicious; a little worried, perhaps that the akubra is venturing into Bush Tucker Man territory; let us ease your doubts.

These ain’t no Paul Hogan hats – the wide, flat brim and pretty femme colours boost them well and truly into fashion forward territory. We love them with long, tousled hair, a blouse and shorts or trousers and a tee: a delicious nod to Aussie style sans dangling corks and VB stubbies. Today we received a huge shipment of Saint James Striped Tees from France and we could not be more excited. We received the following styles: Minquiers 10 in white/navy and navy/blush, Meridien 2 in ecru/navy, Frehel in ecru/navy, Naval in white/cobalt and Lezardrieux in ecru/red. Prices range from $105 for the brushed cotton Minquiers to $235 for the silky Lezardrieux.

The label was established in Normandy over 100 years ago and originally started as striped sweaters for fishermen and eventually Navy uniforms. They created the original Breton Stripe Tee and are celebrated the world over for their use of top quality cottons and completely classic cuts that transcend trends. Buy one now and wear it in 10 years time...There's not many pieces you can say that about these days!

A few fit notes.... the best selling styles (Minquiers 10 and Meridien 2) are unisex, therefore designed to be worn loosely. I personally think its important to keep the silhouette of your stripey modern, take note of how the celebs (especially Alexa Chung) are wearing theirs...the BAGGIER THE BETTER. Balance out the loose slouchy top with a close cut chino, leather leggings or fitted jeans....coming into the warmer weather roll up the sleeves and rock it with shorts....distressed denim or cute tailored ones are my pick. If you are brave, wear your stripey with a printed pant/short or skirt to mix things up a bit.

I think Im going to get every single one and make them my spring staple....

Amrit's Song Of The Week

This song needs no introduction! If you love 90s music as much as I do, you would probably look back on Mark Morrison's "Return of the Mack" with the same fond memories. I cannot get enough of this remix and hopefully you too, will have it on on repeat all weekend.

This remix comes from Brooklyn based producer Dave Edwards, and could have gone horribly wrong on so many levels, but it really, really works. The track goes perfectly with the vocals and still retains the 90s essence of the classic. Fingers crossed this makes a comeback this summer and we hear it on all the dance floors. The track is available as a free download from Dave's Soundcloud and his single "Dance The Night Away" and other remixes are definitely worth a listen too. Definite party tracks to kick start the weekend. Happy listening!

So, the stores are currently overflowing with silk (in a really good way!) EQUIPMENT shirts have just arrived and we are already frothing for them. Think navy, indigo, love hearts, paisley, raspberry, cream, taupe, chartreuse, stripes, black, red and so many more!!!

This latest silk extravaganza has made us think... could the silk shirt be yet another staple piece for the establishment of our ultimate smart wardrobe? Let's suss it out ...

The shirt in general, whether it be silk or not, is a great way to work sophistication into your look without appearing like you're rushing to an important work meeting.....so long as you team it with the right things of course. For example, we are major fans of the denim + shirt combo. It just works. Denim shorts, denim jeans, denim jackets. If you can get these two things together and then add a scarf, fabulous piece of jewellery or fantastic pair of shoes then it's pretty much a no brainer. Or perhaps you're heading out for a weekend lunch, why not try a pair of amazing wide leg pants or jeans (like our Fidelity BELLADONNAS) with the shirt tucked in, bright belt and a pair of wedges.. am I painting pictures for you?

One of our favourite ways to see an EQUIPMENT shirt worn is loosely over a pair of Empire rose pants- Halsters, Jodphurs, Breeches or Audreys. This combo can create a really chic look and with very little effort... this combo is perfect with a pair of ballet flats, ankle booties or heels (sky high if you dare!). Last but definitely not the least (or final, as how you can rock a shirt is pretty endless) why not layer it up with a super cosy knit. Zara is a fan of this look and rocks it back under her gold knit and Karen Walker Lurex polka dot skirt.

So, we end with the question...Does the silk shirt make the cut for 'The Ultimate Smart Wardrobe'? We like to think so and once you get your hands on one and make it your own, we're pretty sure that you will agree with us!

Can we just have a moment to consider how great sequins are? I bloody LIVE for them. I figure at least one of my parents is part magpie, because if you adhere sparkles to anything I’m liable to swoop down, take it from you with my pointy beak and return to my nest, gloating and rolling around in the gleaming prettiness for the rest of the afternoon. Actually, can birds roll? Maybe they just build piles of glitter and dive in like Scrooge McDuck… Either way, you’d better believe those chicks are having fun.

ANYWAY. What’s not to love? When they’re done right (read: not on a dancing costume or anywhere near Paris Hilton), glitter is a little camp, a little vintage, super happy, often outrageous; it’s shades of JLo, Bowie and Grandma Yetta in equal measures… I don’t know about you, but that’s boxes ticked for me.

And don’t go giving me that “only for evening” silliness. Sparkles are great for the day, just tone them down a tad with trousers or a casual jacket and pared back makeup. After all, one must leave some glittering surprises in one’s kit for later.

So, after receiving the fantastic BLACK ORCHID Equinox Jeans in Black (pictured above on Alessandra Ambrosio) and realising just how great they could look teamed with so many different tops, we have decided to help all our ZBS followers out. Without further adieu, let us introduce you to the beginning of our fashionable How To section... 'Building the ULTIMATE smart wardrobe" Part 1: Skinny Black Pants.

To begin, you're obvioiusly in need of a pair of skinny black pants. Now, don't be put off by the work 'skinny', we mean slim, slightly tapered in or just a black pair that you feel great in. Once you have these, all you need to do is work them back with tops that you love. Whether it be something as casual as a plain white tee or singlet or even something a little more dressy like a black blazer and silk shirt (perhaps a silk EQUIPMENT shirt) there is no right or wrong. Black has a tendency to work with most colours, so you don't have a problem there.

Just remember to start with the base and build up as you go.

For example: Black Jeans/pants + a simple tee or crazy sequin blouse + your fave accessory + ballet flats, boots or sky high heels = how you can work skinny black pants well!

Amrit's Song Of The Week

Singer/songwriter Birdy is one of my favourite voices at the moment and in the above clip she performs an Ed Sheeran cover, "The A Team". I first stumbled across Birdy when I found her cover of Bon Iver's "Skinny Love" on Youtube (this is definitely worth checking out) and fell in love with her angelic voice. At the young age of 15, she sings with so much feeling, and the rich texture of her voice is just absolute perfection.

Birdy has just scored a publishing deal with one of the world’s biggest publishing companies 14th Floor Records (part of Atlantic Records) and I have no doubt that this girl will be the next big thing on the airwaves. This season MANNING CARTELL has made it clear that colour is B.I.G!
And, considering ZBS is all for colour it suits us just fine. If natural fibres such as linen, silk, French lace, cotton and Italian jersey knits in terracotta, sand, stone, clay and citrus don't do it for you then we're not sure what else will?!
The collection is based on a journey through the sand dunes of Africa, exploring texture and colour, feeling cool and warm and with the hope to create a piece with the same quaint vision of a mirage.
